Upper Extremity

At Advanced Prosthetics Center we take a unique approach to treating patients with upper extremity limb loss. We realize there is more to rehabilitation than just providing a prosthetic device. We believe there are often complex psychological difficulties accompanying the loss of a limb and the physical pain associated with it, which can affect the overall outcome of a persons rehabilitation. Which is why we take a team approach to providing a level of care to help ensure each patient can achieve a successful outcome when incorporating their prosthesis into daily life.

Our team approach involves communication with the patient, their surgeon, and medical teams both pre and post operatively. As well as offering psychological and supportive counseling with a clinical psychologist both as inpatient and within our clinics.

Once the patient is ready to be fitted with a prosthesis the prosthetist and a physical therapist will work together in the same facility to ensure a proper fit of the prosthesis as well as tailoring training for an individuals specific needs. This approach can be vital in the early application and task orientation for the use of a prosthesis. Socket fit is often the major factor in determining successful functional capabilities for the patient. And having the prosthetist available to troubleshoot prosthetic fit can be paramount in enabling a successful therapy outcome.

Prosthesis Types
There are several options available to an individual dealing with upper extremity limb loss. These options should be explained and offered based upon the needs of the individual. All prosthetic devices do not offer equal options of functionality. The type of device used needs to be based solely upon a persons need and desire of attempting to restore a patient to a previous level of function.

Rehabilitation needs to begin with a foundation, and the prosthesis provides a tool to enable one to begin rebuilding his/her functional ability. Any rehabilitative foundation and chosen style of prosthesis can also include a rebuilding of a persons body image as well as an emotional healing through the sense of being whole again.

Advanced Prosthetics provides a full spectrum of prosthetic devices as well as training and support to ensure successful rehabilitation. The device types are as follows:

  • Custom Cosmetic Restoration

  • Conventional Body-Powered Prosthesis

  • Electric Powered Myo-electric

  • Hybrid

These options are discussed with patients and often can be used together to provide the best possible outcome to fulfill the expectations of a person's unique personality.

Often upper extremity amputees have had a bad experience with prosthetics or have simply rejected the notion of using a prosthesis due to limitations in availability or training from experienced clinicians. This notion has lead people to feel not using a prosthesis is their best and only option. Through the use of advanced technology as well as modern anatomically contoured socket designs Advanced Prosthetics can customize a program to ensure optimal function. The proper application of a team approach can achieve outcomes once thought impossible by individuals with an upper extremity amputation.
