Microprocessor Knees

Microprocessor knees have become some of the most well known products on the prosthetic market today.  Their popularity is due mostly in part to local and national media coverage of the wounded soldiers returning from the Iraqi War.

Microprocessor prosthetic technology provides a patient with a more sophisticated method of control to a prosthetic knee.  Each knee is designed to help the patient walk with a much more stable and efficient gait that more closely resembles a natural gait.

All of the knees have an internal computer or microprocessor that controls an internal fluid, either hydraulic, pneumatic, or Magnetorheologic fluid.  This internal computer monitors each step in a gait cycle.

This continuous monitoring and control of fluid allows the processor to make necessary resistance adjustment to the knee so the wearer can walk more efficiently at various speeds and walk safer step over step down ramps and stairs.

The C-Leg by Otto Bock
The most heavily medically covered knee has been the Microprocessor knee made by the German company Otto Bock.

Their knee is called the "C-leg" and it has gained brand recognition because it was the first product of its kind released into the market.

The prosthetic knee allows users to walk down stairs and ramps step over step, and also has a stumble recovery feature.
